Back to work...for good?

In the words of Take That “I want you back for good”, rather than a person, I’m talking about weddings!

I was hoping that the wedding industry could start moving forward without restrictions, but unfortunately our opening up day has been postponed until 19th July 2021, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it is our final date, but for now it’s great to get back to work even though I’m not sure how I would fit over eighty guests in a socially distant group shot, but i’ll give it a go!

In May I had the absolute joy of getting back to photographing a wedding, after an absence of fourteen months. What made the day even more exciting was that they were good friends of mine, and it was such a pleasure to be asked to share and document their special day. It was strange to be back with all the different restrictions in place. The one that was difficult to get used to was wearing a mask whilst taking photographs. I hadn’t thought about how much my viewfinder would steam up, but after some adjustments I made it work.

The wedding was held at the seaside location of Worthing Dome. The downstairs is a beautiful Edwardian style cinema and upstairs there are a couple of bright and airy functions rooms, with a lovely balcony overlooking the pier. The venue was perfect for a smaller capacity wedding, there was plenty of space without it feeling empty, and it maintained an intimate atmosphere. Unfortunately due to the Covid restrictions we were not allowed to wander around to take photographs in the beautiful old cinema or foyer. We also didn’t have the chance to take full advantage of the beach and pier as it was a rainy day. It was even too much for my trusty rainbow umbrellas. The weather did not dampen the mood of my fabulous couple and their guests. We found some lovely spots in the function rooms to take photographs, and we did eventually manage to run out in-between showers to the beach. The guests were great sports and were happy to pop outside on to the balcony in the rain. Difficult weather conditions can be awkward to deal with, but it can make for some lovely natural photographs that are individual to your day. I love the fact that you can actually see the raindrops in some of the photographs. I chose to not photoshop the rain out, even though it was an uninvited guest I felt it was still a part of their day.

I think that because you can photoshop, I doesn't mean that you should. I like my photographs to maintain a more naturalistic essence to them. I feel your wedding photographs should be as real to your day, and to you as possible. I’m not a fan myself of the current trend in filters. I think wedding photographs should look timeless and could look just as relevant in a hundred years time.

The Fabulous Five

Hooray! The rule of six returns today and to celebrate this I wanted to share photographs from a family photo shoot I did last Autumn before lockdown 2, (how was that only six months ago, and feel like two years ago)?

A lovely client whom I had taken their wedding and family photographs bought the portrait shoot as a gift for their sister-in-law. it’s always such a joy to have repeat customers, it feels like you are doing something right.

We went to Tilgate Park in Crawley. I hadn’t been there for many years and I had forgotten how lovely it was. There was a beautiful (if cold) mist over the pond, and the leaves were all starting to change into different shades of reds, yellows and oranges. I met this wonderful family there early in the morning. We walked around the park stopping when we saw a beautiful backdrop or a magnificent tree for the children to stand in front of or then climb and swing on. It was such a lovely morning and I was so pleased with the pictures. The children were a delight and an absolute pleasure to photograph. It always helps if the children are happy to engage in the shoot and these three were superstars, even giving me the occasional suggestion of where to take a photograph. We also had a great chat about school, birthdays and my new kitten. I have really missed these interactions and have particularly missed taking photographs of fantastic children like these three, it’s always such fun.

I am able to take location family portraits again. The cost is £75 for one hour with unlimited images on a usb.

It's not easy being a big sister

So here we are back in lockdown again. I have yet again lost the ability to work, but now not only on weddings, but also family portrait shoots. I understand and support it, but it is getting me down and I am finding it hard to keep up enthusiasm and positivity. I think that maybe one of the reasons why it is taking me so long to post my blogs. I also think it maybe because I haven't had a lot of work over the past year to share, so i’m saving my photo shoots up, as I did with my Easter eggs when I was a child. I want them to last for as long as possible.

That is enough about me. I want to share these lovely photographs of a wonderful family I had the joy to be able to photograph in the Summer. I had photographed them before, but this time there was a new member. A gorgeous little bundle called Fearne (such a beautiful name). We had to postpone the shoot as it was at the time we had the tropical heat wave. I am more than happy to rearrange shoots, especially when it’s for little children. Being a mum myself I understand the needs of babies and children, and if you are going to photograph them you want them to be as happy and comfortable as possible.

Fearne was adorable and the perfect model, she was happy to be photographed and wasn’t upset by the flash, but on the other hand her big sister Violet, (also a gorgeous name) wasn’t happy about the photographs because she wasn’t happy about becoming a big sister. She really was not impressed and would quite happily have had her new baby sister sent back to the hospital. This did make for one of my most favourite photographs of the year, little frowning Violet who looks deep in thought and contemplation. They say don’t work with children and animals, but I love it as they always make honest and true photographs. Violet was a good girl and worked through her conflicted feelings, and with the help of my magic blue footstool and bean bag she ended up enjoying it and having fun. I’m pretty sure she even came around to the idea of her new baby sister in the end.

I always like to add a personal touch on my baby photo shoot packages, so I made a customised embroidery for the girls.

Double the trouble, but double the cuddles

So here we are in lockdown for the second time. I am unable to work again and have had to cancel more photo shoots. I have had no wedding work since the outbreak and have had many couples cancel and decide to have a small ceremony with no photographer, but I have been lucky enough to have the opportunity to photograph some lovely families and some gorgeous little babies this year. This photoshoot was really special to me as I had already photographed this lovely couple on their wedding day. It was a joy to be messaged by them and to be asked to photograph them and their ten month old twin boys. They wanted to have the photographs taken where they got married and I had taken some of their wedding shots. Grange Gardens in Lewes is a beautiful spot. It did not disappoint on this very hot day in August. They had planted beautiful wildflowers boarders instead of the usual manicured beds this year because of the Covid 19 restrictions and staffing. It still look stunning and made a lovely backdrop for the photographs.

It was an absolute joy to be reunited with this fabulous couple and to photograph their beautiful baby boys. It really was a highlight for me this year. It means so much to me to be asked to document this wonderful families milestones. The thought that my photographs sit in their and their families homes means so much. It’s always a privilege to be a part of someones special moments. Here’s to a better 2021 and being able to get back out there and to be able to share more special times with some lovely people.

Storm Dennis - The Uninvited Wedding Guest

I have been waiting to post these photographs since the beginning of lockdown. I didn’t want to post them as I felt it would not be fair to the many couples that were unable to get married and had their big day postponed or cancelled. I thought I would wait and post them when life was on it’s way to go back to normal, but as I think they may not happen now until way into 2021 I have decided to post them. Perhaps now they will cheer someone up and will be a reminder of the good things to come and that there is so much to look forward to. I cannot wait until I can get back to photographing weddings again and being a part of someone’s special day, to be surrounded by people and to be able to see smiles and to be seen smiling ( not that I am against wearing a mask).

I met this lovely couple at a wedding fair, they said they chose me to be their photographer as they liked my natural style, relaxed personality, and that I wasn’t the type of photographer to make them pose and be unnatural in their photographs. Your wedding day is all about you, but if you don’t like to be the centre of attention your photographer must respect your boundaries. I do not push my ideas on to my couples, I like to let them warm up and relax into their photographs. I have seen many wedding photographs in which the couple look uneasy and stressed. I have received a lot of positive feedback from my couples about how they felt I put them at ease and they felt so relaxed that they actually enjoyed having their photographs taken, when then usually they hate it.

The wedding took place in February at the beautiful venue of Long Furlong Barn in Worthing. It is a well oiled machine there, and I would highly recommend the venue to someone that wants a barn wedding. There is plenty of space, indoors and out and every little detail is thought about. Unfortunately we couldn’t make the most of the outside as Storm Dennis had other ideas, he bought with him 120mph cold winds and plenty of rain, needless to say it was rather difficult to get over 100 guests outside for a group photograph, (people don’t really dress for the weather at a wedding), but with the help of the best man and my bossy voice we managed it. It’s funny to think of being in a venue with over 100 people now, it seems so strange.

I had a lovely day photographing such a wonderful couple along with their kind and jolly family and friends. I am glad that I managed to photograph two weddings in 2020. I have really missed my work and cannot wait to get back to it. Unfortunately that may be some time in the future as I have had many cancelled and postponed weddings, Covid 19 sucks!
